Global: WHO Warns of Continued Global Spread of Deadly Mpox Strain

The World Health Organization (WHO) has raised concerns over the ongoing spread of mpox caused by the Clade 1b strain, which continues to spread globally, with Africa remaining the hardest-hit region.

Rising Cases Across Multiple Countries

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) remains the epicenter of the outbreak, recording the highest number of cases. However, Uganda and Burundi are also experiencing significant surges in infections.

Several other African nations, including Kenya, Rwanda, and Zambia, have reported evidence of community transmission, signaling the virus’s continued expansion. Meanwhile, Zimbabwe has documented travel-related cases of Clade 1b, raising concerns about cross-border transmission.

Beyond Africa, 38 cases of Clade 1b mpox have been reported in 13 countries, though no fatalities have been recorded so far.

Alarming Global Infection Rates

As of the end of 2024, mpox cases had surpassed 125,000 worldwide, with confirmed infections reported in more than 100 countries. WHO continues to monitor the outbreak closely, urging nations to strengthen public health responses.

Understanding Mpox and Its Risks

Mpox is primarily transmitted through close physical contact with an infected person. The virus typically causes symptoms such as:

  • Fever
  • Muscle aches
  • Painful, boil-like skin lesions

While most cases are mild, mpox can be fatal, particularly in individuals with weakened immune systems or underlying health conditions.

WHO has emphasized the need for increased surveillance, early detection, and timely intervention to curb further spread of the virus. Governments and health organizations worldwide are being urged to prioritize awareness campaigns and preventive measures.
