Nigeria: How Digital Technologies Can Transform Nigeria’s Healthcare Industry

Olumide Ibikunle discusses the promising role of digital technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), in advancing Nigeria’s healthcare sector, particularly in community pharmacy practice.

How are community pharmacies in Nigeria evolving with technology?

Community pharmacies have always been vital primary healthcare providers in Nigeria, especially in areas with limited access to healthcare facilities. As digital technologies, like AI, continue to advance, this role is set to expand significantly. In my experience managing multiple pharmacies in Lagos, we have already adopted technology for tasks like inventory and staff management. But the potential extends far beyond that—digital tools will help pharmacies evolve from medication dispensaries to comprehensive healthcare providers.

What are the most promising impacts of AI on pharmacy practice in Nigeria?

AI holds transformative potential for improving patient care in community pharmacies. For example, it can automate routine tasks, allowing pharmacists to focus more on patient consultations, medication therapy management, and preventive care—similar to advanced roles in the UK and France. AI-powered diagnostic tools and personalized treatment algorithms can also help pharmacists predict which patients may have adverse drug reactions or benefit from specific medications. This capability is especially valuable in Nigeria, where healthcare resources are scarce and rural communities lack adequate medical facilities. AI-enabled telepharmacy services could bridge this gap, offering virtual consultations and guidance for patients in remote regions.

How can AI enhance operational efficiency in pharmacies?

AI significantly improves operational efficiency, especially in inventory management. By forecasting demand and automating reordering, AI ensures that essential medications are consistently available, minimizes waste, and reduces operational costs. Additionally, digital systems that monitor drug interactions can alert pharmacists to potential risks, reducing human error and improving patient safety. This proactive approach streamlines pharmacy operations and enhances resource management, allowing for more effective, efficient service delivery.

What challenges do you foresee with AI integration in pharmacy practice?

Several challenges need to be addressed for AI integration to succeed. Data privacy and ethics are primary concerns, as Nigeria’s data protection regulations are still evolving. Implementing AI without adequate data safeguards risks compromising patient trust. Job displacement is another challenge: AI’s automation of certain tasks could reduce the need for pharmacy technicians and support staff, creating job insecurity in the industry. Moreover, high implementation costs could put advanced AI systems out of reach for small, independent pharmacies, widening the gap between urban and rural healthcare access.

What growth opportunities do you see as AI integrates into healthcare?

The integration of AI and digital health technologies presents substantial growth potential for Nigerian pharmacies. As healthcare in Africa expands, digital solutions are expected to open up new revenue streams. Community pharmacies could double their market share over the next decade by expanding into preventive care, chronic disease management, and online services. This evolution allows pharmacies to serve underserved populations more effectively, positioning them to meet growing healthcare demands across the country.

Finally, what’s your vision for the future of pharmacy practice in Nigeria?

My vision is a healthcare system where everyone, regardless of location or financial status, has access to essential medicines and care. I see AI as a critical tool in building a patient-centered pharmacy model, where pharmacists provide holistic healthcare services—including patient counseling, chronic care planning, and health management. With responsible innovation and investment, Nigeria’s pharmacy sector can become a model for other African countries. The challenges are real, but the potential for meaningful change is vast and inspiring.
