Nigeria: Medical Experts Advocate Transparent Communication on Medications and Treatment with Patients

Prominent medical professionals are emphasizing the importance of doctors engaging in open and transparent communication with their patients, particularly when it comes to medications and treatment. They assert that patients’ voices and understanding should be valued throughout the entire healthcare process.

The experts stress that withholding information from patients, including the names of prescribed medications, is a practice that should be abandoned in modern healthcare. They argue that involving patients in their care encourages a deeper understanding of their medical condition and promotes better compliance with prescribed treatments.

Dr. Austine Aipoh, a Public Health Physician, emphasized that the era of doctors concealing information from patients is long gone. He highlighted that not informing patients about the drugs prescribed to them can lead to trouble for doctors. He emphasized that doctors should acknowledge the patient’s right to know about their prescribed medication, as it benefits both parties.

Dr. Aipoh stated, “Apart from the patient knowing what he is taking, it also protects you as a doctor. For example, if you give a drug to a patient and you don’t write the name and the patient comes back with another different complaint about reacting to something, he may just accuse you of being responsible for his problem. Whereas, the patient may have gone to buy and take another medication before coming to see you. So, it is a two-way thing.”

He further explained that effective communication between doctors and patients is essential, not only for the patient’s understanding but also for the doctor’s protection. In case of any issues or adverse reactions, having documentation of the prescribed drug is crucial.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has highlighted the significance of safe medication practices, emphasizing that medication-related harm constitutes a substantial portion of preventable harm in healthcare. Medication errors can result in severe harm, disabilities, or even fatalities.

Dr. Aipoh also noted that patients should feel empowered to ask their doctors for the names of prescribed drugs if this information is not provided. He reiterated that patients have the right to know what they are taking and that doctors should embrace patient-centered care and effective communication.

Dr. Yemisi Solanke-Koya echoed the importance of patient engagement and understanding throughout the healthcare process. She emphasized that involving patients in their care fosters deeper comprehension of their medical conditions and increases compliance with treatment protocols.

In conclusion, the medical community underscores the significance of transparent communication between doctors and patients, particularly regarding medications and treatment plans. Open dialogue not only benefits patient care but also ensures patient safety and satisfaction.
