MTN Group Fintech has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first recipient of the Regional Platform Business Award at MTN’s prestigious Y’ello Care Awards, recognizing its exceptional impact on community development and digital empowerment initiatives across Africa.

In a statement, the company highlighted that MoMo teams at both the group and country levels implemented diverse projects aimed at promoting digital literacy, financial inclusion, healthcare access, and support for vulnerable populations. These efforts reflect MTN’s broader commitment to leveraging technology for social transformation.

Across participating countries — including Rwanda, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Benin, Cameroon, South Sudan, and Uganda — MoMo teams rolled out initiatives such as mobile money training programs, digital skills workshops, installation of solar panels in community centers, and donations of essential goods and resources to underserved areas.

A major focus of the campaign was on enhancing digital inclusion. MTN provided smartphones, established community-based digital learning centers, and offered tailored training programs to equip individuals with the skills needed to thrive in the modern digital economy. These initiatives not only boosted digital participation but also helped tackle unemployment by empowering individuals through education and entrepreneurship.

Financial inclusion remained at the core of MTN’s outreach, with MoMo teams conducting financial literacy sessions, grant distributions, and provision of Point-of-Sale (PoS) devices to promote small business growth and economic independence in low-income communities.

In addition, several markets launched health-focused interventions, including the distribution of smartphones to healthcare workers, solar installations to power medical facilities, and technology-driven campaigns to raise awareness on issues such as HIV/AIDS prevention and general wellness.

The Ivory Coast team’s targeted support for marginalized groups, such as people with albinism and the deaf community, stood out. Through specialized mobile technology training and leadership development, these initiatives empowered participants to start businesses and achieve financial independence.

Speaking on the achievement, Nikiwe Tanga, Chief Legal Officer of MTN Group Fintech, who received the award alongside CEO Serigne Dioum, said:

“This year’s Y’ello Care campaign showcased how technology can effectively address complex social challenges. By focusing on digital literacy, financial inclusion, and healthcare access, MoMo is helping build stronger, more resilient communities across Africa.”

The adjudicators, Trialogue, commended MTN’s hyperlocal approach, noting that projects tailored to community-specific needs delivered stronger, sustainable results. They emphasized that digital inclusion drives widespread social and economic participation and that collaboration with governments, NGOs, and community leaders amplifies impact.

As MTN Group Fintech celebrates this milestone, the company reaffirmed its dedication to developing sustainable, tech-driven solutions that enhance livelihoods across the continent.

“We are proud to be the first platform business to win this award,” said Tanga. “This recognition underscores the passion and commitment of our teams who continue to embody MTN’s mission to enrich lives and create shared value in every community we serve.”
