The competition recognises groundbreaking tools that address the urgent problems of substandard antibiotics and weak supply chain systems, especially in low- and middle-income countries.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"818\" data-end=\"910\">From a competitive pool of <strong data-start=\"845\" data-end=\"880\">171 entries across 51 countries<\/strong>, Nigeria\u2019s entries stood out:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"912\" data-end=\"1174\">\n<li data-start=\"912\" data-end=\"1024\">\n<p data-start=\"914\" data-end=\"1024\"><strong data-start=\"914\" data-end=\"927\">Com-WATCH<\/strong> leverages community-sourced data to track antibiotic inventories and identify counterfeit drugs.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1025\" data-end=\"1174\">\n<p data-start=\"1027\" data-end=\"1174\"><strong data-start=\"1027\" data-end=\"1036\">RxBot<\/strong> is a multilingual, WhatsApp-based platform designed to monitor and report substandard and falsified antibiotics in high-risk communities.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1176\" data-end=\"1291\">The selected finalists will compete for a <strong data-start=\"1218\" data-end=\"1243\">\u00a31 million prize pool<\/strong>, with winners to be announced on <strong data-start=\"1277\" data-end=\"1290\">August 20<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1293\" data-end=\"1653\">Nigeria is joined by other African nations in the final round, including <strong data-start=\"1366\" data-end=\"1412\">Cameroon, Kenya, Malawi, Namibia, Ethiopia<\/strong>, and the <strong data-start=\"1422\" data-end=\"1458\">Democratic Republic of the Congo<\/strong>, showcasing a continental push to improve antibiotic access and safety. The shortlisted projects range from AI-powered pharmacy solutions to paper-based diagnostic tools linked with mobile apps.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1655\" data-end=\"1772\"><strong data-start=\"1655\" data-end=\"1671\">Sally Davies<\/strong>, UK Special Envoy on AMR and Chair of the Trinity Challenge, underlined the gravity of the crisis:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"1773\" data-end=\"2037\">\n<p data-start=\"1775\" data-end=\"2037\">\u201cWe are in the middle of an antibiotic emergency. The shortage of effective antibiotics and the widespread use of counterfeit drugs are accelerating resistance, particularly in vulnerable communities. These finalists prove that innovation can change the course.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"2039\" data-end=\"2425\">According to the <strong data-start=\"2056\" data-end=\"2088\">News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)<\/strong>, AMR-related complications are responsible for <strong data-start=\"2136\" data-end=\"2168\">millions of deaths each year<\/strong>, with projections showing a potential <strong data-start=\"2207\" data-end=\"2253\">39 million fatalities in the next 25 years<\/strong> if the trend is not addressed. Countries like Nigeria bear a disproportionate burden, with nearly <strong data-start=\"2352\" data-end=\"2383\">three million annual deaths<\/strong> linked to treatable bacterial infections.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2427\" data-end=\"2704\">Health professionals have consistently raised concerns over the circulation of fake or poor-quality antibiotics, particularly in underserved rural areas. These ineffective drugs not only fail to cure infections but also fuel resistance, making future treatments less effective.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2706\" data-end=\"2786\"><strong data-start=\"2706\" data-end=\"2719\">Chika Eze<\/strong>, an Abuja-based AMR researcher, lauded the Nigerian innovations:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"2787\" data-end=\"2905\">\n<p data-start=\"2789\" data-end=\"2905\">\u201cTools like RxBot are vital.
