{"id":6323,"date":"2025-06-14T07:49:05","date_gmt":"2025-06-14T07:49:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/regtechafrica.com\/healthcare\/?p=6323"},"modified":"2025-06-14T13:51:32","modified_gmt":"2025-06-14T13:51:32","slug":"africa-tunisia-to-host-inaugural-mena-one-health-conference-to-advance-multisectoral-disease-preparedness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/regtechafrica.com\/healthcare\/africa-tunisia-to-host-inaugural-mena-one-health-conference-to-advance-multisectoral-disease-preparedness\/","title":{"rendered":"Africa: Tunisia to Host Inaugural MENA \u201cOne Health\u201d Conference to Advance Multisectoral Disease Preparedness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"301\" data-end=\"554\">Tunisia will host the <strong data-start=\"323\" data-end=\"370\">first MENA Regional \u201cOne Health\u201d Conference<\/strong> on <strong data-start=\"374\" data-end=\"394\">June 14\u201315, 2025<\/strong>, marking a landmark step in advancing coordinated action across health, agriculture, and environmental sectors to address zoonotic diseases and pandemic risks.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"556\" data-end=\"854\">The event, which will bring together delegates from <strong data-start=\"608\" data-end=\"624\">17 countries<\/strong> across the Middle East and North Africa, will convene <strong data-start=\"679\" data-end=\"711\">over 40 high-level officials<\/strong>, including <strong data-start=\"723\" data-end=\"739\">10 ministers<\/strong> and senior representatives from national ministries, United Nations agencies, and global development institutions.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"856\" data-end=\"1135\">The conference is funded by the <strong data-start=\"888\" data-end=\"902\">World Bank<\/strong> and supported by key international bodies, including the <strong data-start=\"960\" data-end=\"995\">World Health Organization (WHO)<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"997\" data-end=\"1040\">Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"1042\" data-end=\"1077\">UN Environment Programme (UNEP)<\/strong>, and the <strong data-start=\"1087\" data-end=\"1134\">World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1137\" data-end=\"1439\">Announcing the event during a press briefing at the <strong data-start=\"1189\" data-end=\"1219\">Pasteur Institute of Tunis<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"1221\" data-end=\"1244\">Prof. Hechmi Louzir<\/strong>, Chair of the Scientific Committee, underscored the conference\u2019s significance in promoting <strong data-start=\"1336\" data-end=\"1359\">regional solidarity<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"1364\" data-end=\"1393\">cross-sectoral frameworks<\/strong> for pandemic prevention and ecosystem health.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"1441\" data-end=\"1590\">\n<p data-start=\"1443\" data-end=\"1590\">\u201cThe \u2018One Health\u2019 approach has become indispensable, particularly as more than 70% of emerging human diseases originate from animals,\u201d Louzir said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 data-start=\"1592\" data-end=\"1631\">Carthage Declaration for One Health<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1633\" data-end=\"1981\">A central feature of the gathering will be the introduction of the <strong data-start=\"1700\" data-end=\"1741\">\u201cCarthage Declaration for One Health\u201d<\/strong>, a policy pact proposed by Tunisia to foster joint governance between health, agriculture, and environmental authorities. The declaration has already been circulated to participating nations and is expected to be adopted during the summit.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1983\" data-end=\"2181\">The document outlines <strong data-start=\"2005\" data-end=\"2055\">core principles for integrated health security<\/strong>, data sharing, and coordinated crisis response mechanisms\u2014setting the foundation for future implementation across the region.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2183\" data-end=\"2227\">Strengthening Institutional Architecture<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2229\" data-end=\"2490\"><strong data-start=\"2229\" data-end=\"2257\">Dr. Abderrazek Bouzouita<\/strong>, Director-General of Health at Tunisia\u2019s Ministry of Health, noted that the conference is strategically timed to address <strong data-start=\"2379\" data-end=\"2421\">climate-linked disease vulnerabilities<\/strong> and bolster public health systems in the face of global disruptions.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"2492\" data-end=\"2657\">\n<p data-start=\"2494\" data-end=\"2657\">\u201cThis platform will unify national and regional policies, facilitate knowledge exchange, and drive institutional commitments to the One Health paradigm,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"2659\" data-end=\"2952\"><strong data-start=\"2659\" data-end=\"2674\">Wahib Mehri<\/strong>, Director-General of Veterinary Services at the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, emphasized the need for a <strong data-start=\"2805\" data-end=\"2841\">permanent coordination mechanism<\/strong> between sectors, including real-time data integration to enhance disease surveillance and outbreak prevention.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2954\" data-end=\"3227\">Meanwhile, <strong data-start=\"2965\" data-end=\"2981\">Mosbah Abaza<\/strong>, Director-General of Sustainable Development at the Ministry of Environment, drew attention to the <strong data-start=\"3081\" data-end=\"3151\">interdependence of environmental, agricultural, and health systems<\/strong>, stressing that any imbalance can trigger cascading effects across sectors.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"3229\" data-end=\"3371\">\n<p data-start=\"3231\" data-end=\"3371\">\u201cFrom wastewater treatment to coastal preservation, the environment ministry plays a critical role in the One Health ecosystem,\u201d Abaza said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 data-start=\"3373\" data-end=\"3416\">Toward a Unified Regional Health Agenda<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3418\" data-end=\"3794\">The upcoming conference is expected to generate <strong data-start=\"3466\" data-end=\"3494\">tangible recommendations<\/strong> and foster deeper partnerships to institutionalize the One Health approach across MENA.
