His comments were made during the launch of the book ‘An Imperfect Storm’ in Abuja.

The book, authored by Chikwe Ihekweazu, former Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), and his wife Vivianne Ihekweazu, explores the profound impacts of pandemics on societies. Pate noted that pandemics, from ancient Greece to modern times, have driven major societal changes. He highlighted that COVID-19, described as a once-in-a-century pandemic, is already catalyzing such transformations. “The world is undergoing profound changes, including economic upheavals and an accelerated encounter with new pathogens,” Pate stated.

Reflecting on historical pandemics, Pate underscored that they signal an ongoing pattern of societal upheaval. “We are moving into a world where new pathogens will continually emerge, creating future crises,” he added.

Pate also praised Chikwe Ihekweazu for his leadership in establishing the NCDC and spearheading Nigeria’s COVID-19 response. “Ihekweazu’s work will be remembered as a crucial part of our preparedness for future health crises,” he remarked.

Chikwe Ihekweazu emphasized the importance of strengthening health response systems to better manage future pandemics. Drawing on Nigeria’s 2014 Ebola response, he noted the need for continuous improvement and preparation. “Our past successes should not lead to complacency. We need to ensure that NCDC and other health institutions are better prepared for future challenges,” he said.

Vivianne Ihekweazu added that their book aims not only to recount their experiences but also to provide lessons for public sector leadership and institutional development. “It’s crucial to document and share our experiences to foster learning and growth,” she noted.

The book launch was attended by notable figures including former Secretary to the Government of the Federation Boss Mustapha, former Health Minister Olurunnimbe Mamora, and former National Coordinator of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 Sani Aliyu, among others.

Ali Pate, Nigeria’s Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, has emphasized that pandemics, including COVID-19, have historically led to significant societal transformations.
