DOJ Issues Sentences for Ex-Outcome Health Executives in $1 Billion Fraud Scandal<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ<\/a>) has announced the sentencing of three former executives from Outcome Health, a Chicago-based health technology startup, for their roles in a major fraud scheme. The convictions, which came in April 2023, mark a significant moment in the DOJ\u2019s crackdown on corporate fraud.<\/p>\n

In a press release<\/a> issued on Monday, July 1, the DOJ revealed the sentences for the convicted executives: Rishi Shah, co-founder and former CEO of Outcome Health, has been sentenced to seven years and six months in federal prison. Shradha Agarwal, co-founder and former president, will serve three years in a halfway house. Brad Purdy, former chief operating officer and chief financial officer, received a sentence of two years and three months in prison.<\/p>\n

They falsely claimed to have met advertising commitments while billing clients as if the campaigns had been completed as promised. Additionally, they inflated the company\u2019s revenue figures to secure debt and equity financing, misleading lenders and investors.<\/p>\n

In the press release, Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Nicole M. Argentieri, who leads the DOJ\u2019s Criminal Division, highlighted the broader implications of the case: \u201cThese sentences underscore that \u2018faking it until you make it\u2019 is not an acceptable business practice, whether for a startup or a major corporation. Misrepresenting your financial status to secure customers or financing is straightforward fraud.\u201d<\/p>\n

The DOJ\u2019s recent enforcement actions reflect a broader initiative targeting fraudulent practices in the tech industry. In March, the department had announced its focus on \u201cfake it till you make it\u201d schemes in the tech sector.<\/p>\n
