{"id":4030,"date":"2023-07-26T14:06:15","date_gmt":"2023-07-26T14:06:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/regtechafrica.com\/healthcare\/?p=4030"},"modified":"2023-07-26T14:06:15","modified_gmt":"2023-07-26T14:06:15","slug":"nigeria-despite-assurance-by-speaker-abass-nigerian-doctors-to-commence-strike-wednesday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/regtechafrica.com\/healthcare\/nigeria-despite-assurance-by-speaker-abass-nigerian-doctors-to-commence-strike-wednesday\/","title":{"rendered":"Nigeria: Despite Assurance By Speaker Abass, Nigerian Doctors to Commence Strike Wednesday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body-text\">The\u00a0<a class=\"external external-icon\" title=\"https:\/\/www.premiumtimesng.com\/news\/headlines\/598999-doctors-strike-govt-says-negotiation-ongoing-nard-says-not-true.html\" href=\"https:\/\/www.premiumtimesng.com\/news\/headlines\/598999-doctors-strike-govt-says-negotiation-ongoing-nard-says-not-true.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Association of Resident Doctors<\/a>\u00a0(NARD) has directed its members to embark on an indefinite strike beginning Wednesday, 26 July.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\">The President of NARD, Emeka Orji, disclosed this to PREMIUM TIMES on Tuesday night.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\">This development is coming less than 48 hours after the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abass, pleaded with the doctors for understanding and pledged the new administration&#8217;s commitment to addressing their concerns.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"story-body-text\"><strong>NEC&#8217;s decision<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\">The ARD President said the decision to commence the indefinite strike was taken during the association&#8217;s July National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Lagos.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\">He said further details would be communicated soon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\">&#8220;We just finished our emergency meeting and the NEC has directed that we proceed on total indefinite strike action from 12 midnight, tomorrow Wednesday,&#8221; he said<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"story-body-text\"><strong>Familiar terrain<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\">The doctors had on 17 May embarked on a five-day warning strike following the failure of the Nigerian government to meet its demands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\">The association had in January issued an ultimatum to the government to resolve issues affecting its members, including the immediate implementation and payment of the new hazard allowance and arrears.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\">The doctors, however, commenced the strike due to the government&#8217;s reported failure to meet their demands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\">The union suspended the strike after signing an MoU with the federal government, an agreement it also failed to meet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\">This led the association to issue a two-week ultimatum to the government on 5 July to commence the implementation of all pending agreements or face industrial disharmony.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\">The association said the two-week ultimatum, which ended on 19 July, was to give the government adequate time to begin implementation of the resolutions of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) previously agreed on.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\">It stated that should the government fail to meet its demands by then; its members may embark on a nationwide strike.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The\u00a0National Association of Resident Doctors\u00a0(NARD) has directed its members to embark on an indefinite strike beginning Wednesday, 26 July.
