{"id":3755,"date":"2023-02-27T14:24:49","date_gmt":"2023-02-27T14:24:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/regtechafrica.com\/healthcare\/?p=3755"},"modified":"2023-02-27T14:24:49","modified_gmt":"2023-02-27T14:24:49","slug":"global-over-1-billion-in-43-nations-at-risk-amid-cholera-outbreaks-who-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/regtechafrica.com\/healthcare\/global-over-1-billion-in-43-nations-at-risk-amid-cholera-outbreaks-who-says\/","title":{"rendered":"Global: Over 1 Billion in 43 Nations At Risk Amid Cholera Outbreaks, WHO Says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-para-word-count=\"24\" data-reader-unique-id=\"1\"><em data-reader-unique-id=\"2\">A global surge of cholera cases has put one billion people in 43 countries at risk, the World Health Organization (WHO) cautioned this week.<\/em><\/p>\n<p data-para-word-count=\"22\" data-reader-unique-id=\"3\">Three countries, this week alone, have reported outbreaks, <a title=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/en\/\" href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/en\/\" data-reader-unique-id=\"4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WHO<\/a> <a title=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/cholera\" href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/cholera\" data-reader-unique-id=\"5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cholera<\/a> team leader Philippe Barboza told reporters at a press conference on Friday (February 24, 2022).<\/p>\n<p data-para-word-count=\"16\" data-reader-unique-id=\"6\">For the first time, WHO is asking donors for help to fight the outbreaks, he said.<\/p>\n<p data-para-word-count=\"48\" data-reader-unique-id=\"7\">Right now, <strong data-reader-unique-id=\"8\">22 countries across the world are fighting outbreaks<\/strong> of the acute diarrhoeal infection caused by eating or drinking contaminated food or water. <strong data-reader-unique-id=\"9\">Cholera cases climbed in 2022<\/strong>, following years of falling numbers of cases, and the trend is <strong data-reader-unique-id=\"10\">expected to continue<\/strong> into this year, he said.<\/p>\n<p data-para-word-count=\"32\" data-reader-unique-id=\"11\">He said cases have been reported in <a title=\"https:\/\/cdn.who.int\/media\/images\/default-source\/emergencies\/disease-outbreak-news\/global_cholera_don_map.png?sfvrsn=d3551de1_3\" href=\"https:\/\/cdn.who.int\/media\/images\/default-source\/emergencies\/disease-outbreak-news\/global_cholera_don_map.png?sfvrsn=d3551de1_3\" data-reader-unique-id=\"12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">five of the six regions<\/a> where WHO operates. The latest WHO <a title=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/emergencies\/disease-outbreak-news\/item\/2023-DON437\" href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/emergencies\/disease-outbreak-news\/item\/2023-DON437\" data-reader-unique-id=\"13\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">global overview<\/a> published in early February showed the situation has further deteriorated since 2022.<\/p>\n<p data-para-word-count=\"25\" data-reader-unique-id=\"20\">Poverty, disasters, conflict and climate change consequences continue to be driving factors alongside a lack of access to safe water and sanitation, Dr. Barboza said.<\/p>\n<h3 data-para-word-count=\"3\" data-reader-unique-id=\"21\"><strong data-reader-unique-id=\"22\">Limited vaccine supplies<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-para-word-count=\"21\" data-reader-unique-id=\"24\">&#8220;An unprecedented situation requires an unprecedented response,&#8221; he said, drawing attention to the <strong data-reader-unique-id=\"25\">limited availability of vaccines, medicines, and testing kits<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-para-word-count=\"20\" data-reader-unique-id=\"26\"><strong data-reader-unique-id=\"27\">Only 37 million doses are available in 2023<\/strong>, he said. More doses are expected to be available by next year.<\/p>\n<p data-para-word-count=\"35\" data-reader-unique-id=\"28\">As a result of the current global surge, WHO is, for the first time ever, <strong data-reader-unique-id=\"29\">appealing to donors<\/strong> to support a $25 million fund to help <strong data-reader-unique-id=\"30\">to address cholera outbreaks and save lives<\/strong>, he said.<\/p>\n<p data-para-word-count=\"18\" data-reader-unique-id=\"31\"><strong data-reader-unique-id=\"32\">Prevention is key<\/strong>, he said, noting that nearly half of the world lacks access to safely managed sanitation.<\/p>\n<p data-para-word-count=\"23\" data-reader-unique-id=\"39\">&#8220;Access to <strong data-reader-unique-id=\"40\">safe drinking water and sanitation are<\/strong>internationally recognized <strong data-reader-unique-id=\"41\">human rights<\/strong>,&#8221; he said. &#8220;<strong data-reader-unique-id=\"42\">Making these rights a reality will also end cholera<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3 data-para-word-count=\"3\" data-reader-unique-id=\"45\"><strong data-reader-unique-id=\"46\">Outbreak in Africa<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-para-word-count=\"54\" data-reader-unique-id=\"48\">An <a title=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2023\/02\/1133337\" href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2023\/02\/1133337\" data-reader-unique-id=\"49\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">exponential rise in the number of cholera cases<\/a> in Africa includes an outbreak in <strong data-reader-unique-id=\"50\">Mozambique<\/strong>, which is also grappling with severe storms brought on by <a title=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2023\/02\/1133887\" href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2023\/02\/1133887\" data-reader-unique-id=\"51\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cyclone Freddy<\/a>. The first case of cholera in the current outbreak was reported to the Ministry of Health and WHO from Lago district in Niassa province in September.<\/p>\n<p data-para-word-count=\"36\" data-reader-unique-id=\"52\">As of 19 February, Mozambique reported a cumulative total of 5,237 suspected cases and 37 deaths. All six <strong data-reader-unique-id=\"53\">cholera-affected provinces are flood-prone areas<\/strong>, and WHO anticipates that <strong data-reader-unique-id=\"54\">more will be affected<\/strong> as the <strong data-reader-unique-id=\"55\">rainy season continues<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-para-word-count=\"33\" data-reader-unique-id=\"56\">Considering the <strong data-reader-unique-id=\"57\">frequency of cross-border movement<\/strong> and the history of cross-border spread of cholera during this outbreak, WHO considers the <strong data-reader-unique-id=\"58\">risk of further disease spread<\/strong> as <strong data-reader-unique-id=\"59\">very high<\/strong> at national and regional levels.<\/p>\n<div aria-expanded=\"true\" data-campaign=\"Newsletter Signup InRead English v1\" data-reader-unique-id=\"61\">\n<div data-reader-unique-id=\"62\">\n<div data-reader-unique-id=\"65\">\n<div class=\"auxiliary\" data-reader-unique-id=\"66\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-para-word-count=\"43\" data-reader-unique-id=\"77\">An estimated 26,000 cases and 660 deaths have been reported as of 29 January 2023 in <strong data-reader-unique-id=\"78\">10 African countries facing outbreaks<\/strong> since the beginning of the year, WHO said. In 2022, nearly 80,000 cases and 1,863 deaths were recorded from 15 affected countries.<\/p>\n<h3 data-para-word-count=\"3\" data-reader-unique-id=\"79\"><strong data-reader-unique-id=\"80\">Multiple countries affected<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-para-word-count=\"25\" data-reader-unique-id=\"82\">Neighbouring <strong data-reader-unique-id=\"83\">Malawi is facing the deadliest cholera outbreakin two decades<\/strong>, and cases are being reported in other countries, including <strong data-reader-unique-id=\"84\">Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia<\/strong>, WHO reported.<\/p>\n<p data-para-word-count=\"31\" data-reader-unique-id=\"85\">The UN health agency said <strong data-reader-unique-id=\"86\">challenges include climate change<\/strong>, which has led to drought or flooding in parts of Africa, <strong data-reader-unique-id=\"87\">resulting in<\/strong> increased population <strong data-reader-unique-id=\"88\">displacement<\/strong> and <strong data-reader-unique-id=\"89\">reduced access to clean water<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-para-word-count=\"17\" data-reader-unique-id=\"90\">Worldwide, people in <strong data-reader-unique-id=\"91\">Haiti, India, Pakistan, the Philippines and Syria, among others<\/strong>, are also affected by outbreaks.<\/p>\n<h3 data-para-word-count=\"2\" data-reader-unique-id=\"92\"><strong data-reader-unique-id=\"93\">Global threat<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-para-word-count=\"53\" data-reader-unique-id=\"95\">Cholera remains a global <strong data-reader-unique-id=\"96\">threat to public health<\/strong>, WHO said. In 2017, affected countries, donors, and partners of the <a title=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/activities\/hosting-the-gtfcc-secretariat\" href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/activities\/hosting-the-gtfcc-secretariat\" data-reader-unique-id=\"97\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Global Task Force on Cholera Control<\/a>launched a renewed global cholera control strategy, Ending Cholera: A Global Roadmap to 2030. It aims at reducing cholera deaths by 90 per cent over the next decade.<\/p>\n<p data-para-word-count=\"38\" data-reader-unique-id=\"98\">While the number of cases had been declining, <strong data-reader-unique-id=\"99\">WHO remains concerned about the current surge<\/strong>.
