In 2020, nearly half a million children died from malaria in Africa alone, a rate of one death per minute.<a class=\"external external-icon\" title=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Lcs5bAO2kX\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Lcs5bAO2kX\">https:\/\/t.co\/Lcs5bAO2kX<\/a>&#8212; UNICEF (@UNICEF)\u00a0<a class=\"external external-icon\" title=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/UNICEF\/status\/1559532172775755778?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/UNICEF\/status\/1559532172775755778?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">August 16, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\">Malaria remains one of the biggest killers of children under five. In 2020, nearly half a million boys and girls died from the disease in Africa alone, a rate of\u00a0<strong>one death every minute<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"story-body-text\"><strong>&#8216;Giant step forward&#8217;<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\">Etleva Kadilli, Director of\u00a0<a class=\"external external-icon\" title=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.org\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UNICEF<\/a>&#8216;s Supply Division,\u00a0<a class=\"external external-icon\" title=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.org\/press-releases\/millions-more-children-benefit-malaria-vaccine-unicef-secures-supply\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.org\/press-releases\/millions-more-children-benefit-malaria-vaccine-unicef-secures-supply\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>\u00a0the rollout sends a clear message to malaria vaccine developers to continue their work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\">&#8220;<strong>We hope this is just the beginning<\/strong>. Continued innovation is needed to develop new and next-generation vaccines to increase available supply, and enable a healthier vaccine market,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\">&#8220;This is a giant step forward in our collective efforts to\u00a0<strong>save children&#8217;s lives and reduce the burden of malaria<\/strong>\u00a0as part of wider malaria prevention and control programmes&#8221;.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"story-body-text\"><strong>Preventable disease<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\">Malaria is caused by parasites and transmitted to humans through infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. While the disease is preventable and curable, it can be fatal if left untreated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\">More than 30 countries have areas with moderate to high malaria transmission, according to data from the World Health Organization (<a class=\"external external-icon\" title=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/en\/\" href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WHO<\/a>), and the vaccine could provide added protection to\u00a0<strong>more than 25 million children each year<\/strong>\u00a0once supply ramps up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\">The RTS,S malaria vaccine &#8211; the result of 35 years of research and development &#8211; is the first-ever vaccine against a parasitic disease.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"story-body-text\"><strong>Pilot programme<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\">It was launched in a 2019 pilot programme, coordinated by WHO, in three countries &#8211; Ghana, Kenya and Malawi &#8211; which has reached more than 800,000 children.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\">Last October, the UN health agency\u00a0<a class=\"external external-icon\" title=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2021\/10\/1102362\" href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2021\/10\/1102362\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recommended<\/a>\u00a0its widespread use in countries with moderate to high malaria transmission.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\">That December, Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, took the decision to provide funding for malaria vaccine programmes in eligible countries, thus opening the pathway for broader roll-out of the vaccine.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"story-body-text\"><strong>Funding &#8216;window&#8217; opened<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\">CEO Seth Barkley reported that Gavi recently opened the &#8220;application window&#8221; for funding requests.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\">&#8220;Thanks to UNICEF&#8217;s procurement work, we now have\u00a0<strong>more certainty on supply<\/strong>\u00a0and can move a step further towards getting this life-saving vaccine to the people who need it the most.
