Zuri Health enables mobile-based virtual consultations, including through SMS, and has rapidly expanded to Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, Uganda, Tanzania, and Zambia since launching in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Egypt,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/esaal.me\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Esaal<\/a>, a telemedicine start-up which enables virtual consultations for patients, raised&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/healthcare\/2022\/mena-health-platform-esaal-raises-1-7m-for-expansion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$1.7 million seed funding<\/a>&nbsp;from&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.a15.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A15<\/a>. Digital health records start-up&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/doxx.care\/auth\/doctor-search\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Doxx<\/a>&nbsp;also&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/disrupt-africa.com\/2022\/05\/23\/egyptian-e-health-startup-doxx-raises-1-5m-seed-round\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">raised $1.5 million in seed funding<\/a>&nbsp;from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/openner.vc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Openner<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/elevate-pe.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Elevate Healthcare<\/a>. The two-year old start-up facilitates doctor appointments for patients while also providing access to their health records across consultations, medication, and diagnostics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blinkpharmacie.com\/auth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Blink Pharma<\/a>,a Moroccan health start-up raised an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/disrupt-africa.com\/2022\/05\/25\/moroccan-e-health-startup-blink-pharma-raises-funding-to-expand-operations\/?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=disrupt_africa_newsletter&amp;utm_term=2022-05-29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">undisclosed pre-seed funding round<\/a>&nbsp;from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/azurpartners.ma\/nos-fonds\/azur-innovation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Azur Innovation Fund<\/a>&nbsp;to drive expansion of its digital marketplace which allows health providers, including pharmacies, laboratories and wholesalers, purchase services from each other.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/welo.health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Welo<\/a>, a South African homecare start-up,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/disrupt-africa.com\/2022\/06\/06\/sas-alphacode-awards-160k-support-to-pandemic-founded-tech-startups\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">received $32,000 in grant funding<\/a>&nbsp;from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.alphacode.club\/incubate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AlphaCode Incubate<\/a>, an early-stage incubation program. Welo provides medication delivery, home testing and home-based consultations to patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a much larger round, health start-up&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/africahealthholdings.com\/index.php\/our-portfolio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CarePoint<\/a>&nbsp;raised a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2022\/05\/17\/carepoint-raises-10m-to-spread-healthcare-tech-across-africa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$10 million bridge round<\/a>&nbsp;to fast-track its deployment of \u201cmicro-clinics\u201d which will leverage telemedicine to scale access to healthcare. The round was led by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/trbadvisors.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TRB Advisors<\/a>&nbsp;with participation from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/breyercapital.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Breyer Capital<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondcapitalventures.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Beyond Capital Ventures<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/corporate.m3.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">M3, Inc<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.asialand.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Asia Pacific Land<\/a>. CarePoint will also leverage the funding to strengthen its data science and artificial intelligence capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Innovators are securing access to technical support through global accelerators and awards<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/clafiya.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Clafiya<\/a>&nbsp;(Nigeria) and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthdart.co.za\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HealthDart<\/a>&nbsp;(South Africa)&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/disrupt-africa.com\/2022\/06\/07\/9-african-startups-selected-for-norrsken-impact-accelerator\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">were selected<\/a>&nbsp;to participate in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.norrskenimpactaccelerator.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Norrsken Impact Accelerator\u2019s<\/a>&nbsp;8-week growth program,&nbsp;and will receive a $125,000 investment from the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.norrsken.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Norrsken Foundation<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/zuri.health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zuri Health<\/a>&nbsp;(Kenya) and&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.safemotherhood-alliance.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Safe Motherhood Alliance<\/a>&nbsp;(Zambia)&nbsp;were&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/bayer-foundation_bfwea22-activity-6930758569722064897-4sjK\/?utm_source=linkedin_share&amp;utm_medium=android_app\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">among five winners<\/a>&nbsp;of the 2022&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bayer-foundation.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bayer Foundation<\/a>&nbsp;Women Empowerment Award. They received \u20ac25,000 in grants and will participate in a 24-week accelerator program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whispahealth.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WHISPA<\/a>&nbsp;(Nigeria),&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.famasi.africa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Famasi<\/a>&nbsp;(Nigeria),&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/oncopadi.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oncopadi<\/a>&nbsp;(Nigeria), and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/yenehealth.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">YeneHealth<\/a>&nbsp;(Ethiopia)&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Tech4impactCIFF\/status\/1533780219630391296?s=20&amp;t=Zy3_dnAZq8cULECJsNkMIg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">were selected among 10 start-ups<\/a>&nbsp;for the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/vc4a.com\/ciff\/wiitpitch-competition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Technology for Impact<\/a>&nbsp;program, a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ciff.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Children\u2019s Investment Fund Foundation<\/a>&nbsp;initiative to support women-led innovations. Three finalists will receive business development assistance, including potential investment, from CIFF and its partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nigeria-based&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/field.inc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Field Intelligence<\/a>&nbsp;has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/disrupt-africa.com\/2022\/05\/24\/nigerias-field-intelligence-accepted-into-endeavor-network\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">been accepted<\/a>&nbsp;into&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/endeavor.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Endeavor<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 a global network that mentors and accelerates high-impact entrepreneurs by providing them with access to support services to help their companies scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessafya.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Access Afya<\/a>, a Kenya-based primary healthcare social enterprise, was selected as one of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World Economic Forum\u2019s<\/a>&nbsp;100 most disruptive&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/communities\/technology-pioneers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Technology Pioneers of 2022<\/a>. The annual selection recognizes early to growth-stage technology-driven businesses that have potential for significant impact. (<em>mPharma and 54gene were selected in last year\u2019s list<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Innovators notched major milestones in supply chain solutions and genomics research<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In Kenya, supply chain start-up&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/maishameds.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maisha Meds<\/a>&nbsp;now serves over&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/techmoran.com\/2022\/05\/31\/maisha-meds-a-kenyan-digital-pharmacy-network-hits-1000-active-facilities-expands-to-nigeria\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1,000 active pharmacies<\/a>&nbsp;with its business management software. The point-of-sale service allows pharmacies manage inventory, avoid stockouts and access product reimbursement features. Maisha Meds\u2019 growing scale mirrors trends captured in Salient Advisory\u2019s upcoming market intelligence report (<strong>to be published on June 22<\/strong>) which highlights rapid growth among business-to-business health start-ups in&nbsp;product distribution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Nigeria, genomics research start-up&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/54gene.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">54gene<\/a>&nbsp;has partnered&nbsp;with the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.interacademies.org\/organization\/academie-des-sciences-et-techniques-du-senegal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Academy of Sciences and Technology of Senegal<\/a>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucad.sn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cheikh Anta Diop University, Dakar<\/a>&nbsp;to develop&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/techbuild.africa\/54gene-smou-senegals-ansts-to-sen-genome-genetics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a full genomic database of the Senegalese population<\/a>. The study will highlight prevalent genetic characteristics and seek to&nbsp;improve local interventions for disease management and treatment. Similarly, working with a consortium of partners, 54gene has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/techbuild.africa\/54gene-consortium-genome-project-100k-nigerians\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">also published<\/a>&nbsp;the first phase of the Nigerian 100K Genomes Project \u2013 a study of the characteristics of non-communicable diseases in 100,000 adults in Nigeria to improve understanding of the genetic basis of highly prevalent diseases. 54gene\u2019s work is essential to filling long-running&nbsp;gaps in African genomic data and research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Large players are deepening their healthtech interests through new service offerings and expansion<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Pan-African e-commerce giant&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jumia.com.ng\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jumia<\/a>&nbsp;is betting on a telemedicine service to drive uptake of \u201cJumiaPay\u201d its newly licensed fintech service. Collaborating with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.meetingdoctors.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meeting Doctors<\/a>, Jumia is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.brandcrunch.com.ng\/2022\/05\/19\/jumia-launches-e-doctor-in-nigeria-to-increase-access-to-healthcare\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">piloting a telemedicine service<\/a>&nbsp;to provide remote access to consultations for $1 monthly. This is the latest turn in Jumia\u2019s interest in healthtech&nbsp;having been involved in facilitating&nbsp;product distribution for pharmacies through its logistics arm and listing&nbsp;over-the-counter medicines on its digital marketplace platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Medical drone delivery service&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/flyzipline.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zipline<\/a>&nbsp;has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/guardian.ng\/news\/zipline-kaduna-begin-first-drone-medical-deliveries-in-nigeria\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">kicked off operations<\/a>&nbsp;in Nigeria\u2019s Kaduna state, months after striking an agreement with the state government.
