Nigeria: NASENI Launches Training Program to Advance Biogas and Biomethanol Plant Design

The National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) has initiated a comprehensive 5-day training program aimed at enhancing expertise in biogas and biomethanol plant design and operation. This initiative is a strategic move to bolster Nigeria’s renewable energy sector and saw the participation of 20 members from various NASENI institutes.

This training, conducted in collaboration with SRH Berlin, Germany—an esteemed entity in commercial-scale biogas and biomethanol plant development—focuses on advancing technical skills and knowledge among NASENI staff.

The program features both onsite sessions and two online courses. Topics covered include medium-scale plant design, process control, CAD/CAM applications, material science for biogas production, methanol synthesis, hydrogen production, and safety protocols.

Dr. Chika Ezeanyanaso, Deputy Director of NASENI’s Nano Science Department, highlighted the training’s significance. Representing Mr. Khalil Suleiman Halilu, Executive Vice Chairman of NASENI, Dr. Ezeanyanaso emphasized that this initiative is vital for equipping NASENI personnel with the necessary skills to design and manage biogas and biomethanol facilities. She noted that a model biogas plant design has already been completed and that the training will provide practical, hands-on experience.

Dr. Ezeanyanaso encouraged participants to fully engage with the training, stressing its potential to greatly benefit NASENI’s renewable energy projects. The program is led by seven experts from SRH Berlin, including Ronald Schnell, Gnana Swaroop, Osvaldo Romero, Edward Antwi, Nomu I, Uduak Bassey, and Michael Hartman, who will deliver advanced training and insights.

Anas Yadiz, Special Assistant to the Executive Vice Chairman on Science and Engineering Commercialisation, and the training coordinator, reiterated NASENI’s commitment to advancing biogas and biomethanol technologies. This initiative supports Nigeria’s broader renewable energy objectives, fostering innovation, skill development, and a transition towards a more sustainable energy future.

This collaborative effort underscores NASENI’s dedication to driving innovation and enhancing the capabilities of its workforce, reinforcing its role in leading Nigeria toward a greener and more energy-efficient future.
