Mobolaji Ogunlende, Lagos State Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, has labeled drug abuse a pandemic in the state, highlighting the urgent need for collective action.
Speaking at the “Empowering Her Fortune Initiative” event in Lagos, Ogunlende urged the youth to avoid substances that could derail their future. The event, held on Tuesday, was organized by the Ikoyi-Obalende Local Council Development Area in collaboration with MTN Momo, the fintech arm of MTN Nigeria.
Ogunlende called for a united effort from stakeholders and concerned citizens to combat drug abuse in communities, stressing its profound impact on public health and safety. He lamented the severe consequences of substance abuse, which includes health complications and accidents leading to loss of life.
“This issue affects us all,” Ogunlende stated. “We cannot ignore it or assume it doesn’t concern us because we don’t partake in drug use.”
He emphasized the importance of treating drug abuse as a critical issue, requiring ongoing involvement from everyone. The commissioner underscored the need for partnerships between the government and private sector to effectively address the crisis.
The Lagos State Government’s commitment to tackling drug abuse is exemplified by the launch of the ‘Lagos Kicks Against Drug Abuse’ campaign. Ogunlende highlighted the importance of continuous efforts to ensure a safer and more prosperous Lagos.
He also praised Lagos youth for their disciplined conduct during the #EndBadGovernance protests and assured them that the state government values their contribution. Ogunlende encouraged young people to leverage opportunities such as the state’s “Students Loan” scheme for empowerment.
Acknowledging the efforts of Ikoyi-Obalende LCDA Chairman, Mr. Fuad Atanda-Lawal, for his focus on women’s empowerment, Ogunlende urged him to maintain his support for youth initiatives.
The empowerment program, which provided 1,000 women with N50,000 each, was attended by lawmakers, traditional leaders, and APC officials.
