Nigeria: KCCI Supports Scrutiny of Foreign-Funded NGOs Over Security Concerns

The Kano Concerned Citizens’ Initiative (KCCI) has expressed strong support for the scrutiny of foreign-funded non-governmental organizations (NGOs) operating in Kano State, citing national security concerns.

KCCI’s Publicity Secretary, Ahmed Aminu, emphasized the urgent need to verify the motives and funding sources of these NGOs, following a recent claim made by a U.S. Congressman alleging that the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) had provided funding to Boko Haram terrorists.

Backing the Special Committee on Security

The group has pledged full support for the special committee established to assess global security threats, vowing to contribute to its success. KCCI also called on residents of Kano State to cooperate with the committee in its efforts to address potential risks.

According to Aminu, KCCI has been closely monitoring the activities of NGOs with foreign affiliations, particularly in light of the security concerns raised regarding USAID’s alleged involvement.

“The recent revelation in the U.S. Congress regarding allegations of USAID’s funding of Boko Haram raises serious concerns about the activities of NGOs linked to foreign aid agencies,” Aminu stated.

Concerns Over Exploitation and External Influence

Aminu warned that local communities remain vulnerable to exploitation due to economic challenges and governance failures, which have made them susceptible to the influence of foreign-funded initiatives.

*”Our people are vulnerable and have become prey to exploitation by these NGOs, largely because of bad governance and economic programs imposed by global entities.

“Our society cannot remain indifferent to all forms of exploitation and the propagation of values that contradict our faith and traditions,”* he added.

Regulating NGO Activities in Kano State

KCCI welcomed the Kano State Government’s decision to regulate NGO operations in the state, highlighting the need for a comprehensive framework to assess their sources of funding, intervention areas, and operational methods.

“The high-powered committee will investigate and document these aspects to recommend a regulatory framework that aligns with Kano State’s vision and development goals. These measures are long overdue,” Aminu stated.

He further stressed that Kano State plays a pivotal role in shaping the socio-political landscape of Northern Nigeria and should not serve as a testing ground for foreign ideologies.

“We commend the State Government for this bold initiative. Kano must not remain an open field for experimenting with ideas that do not align with our values,” Aminu concluded.

Clarification from the U.S. Ambassador

Amidst these concerns, the U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria has denied any evidence of USAID funding Boko Haram, reaffirming the agency’s commitment to humanitarian and development efforts in Nigeria. However, KCCI maintains that transparency and regulation of foreign-funded NGOs remain critical for Kano State’s security and stability.
