The World Health Organization (WHO) has partnered with TikTok to provide users with credible, science-backed health information, aimed at promoting health literacy and combating misinformation. This collaboration is part of WHO’s ongoing efforts to leverage digital platforms to expand its reach, enhance public understanding of health issues, and empower individuals to make informed decisions in today’s digital age.
In a statement released on Thursday, WHO emphasized that social media platforms like TikTok have become powerful tools for shaping public health behaviors and perceptions. With approximately one-quarter of young adults actively seeking news on platforms such as TikTok, the partnership highlights the critical role digital channels play in influencing health-related decisions.
Leveraging Social Media for Health Literacy
WHO noted that while social media is a key source of information for millions, it also presents challenges due to the spread of misinformation. By collaborating with TikTok, WHO aims to counter these challenges, helping users access reliable health information and engage in meaningful discussions about science and well-being.
WHO’s Chief Scientist, Jeremy Farrar, stated that the partnership reflects a shift towards socially responsible platforms. He said, “This collaboration represents an opportunity to reach people of all ages, where and when they need it. By working with TikTok and other platforms, we can help ensure that people receive credible information and engage in scientific discourse that supports a healthier future for all.”
Engaging Influencers to Promote Reliable Health Content
TikTok, with its global community of over 1 billion users, will use the platform’s reach to promote health awareness, share reliable information, and foster a sense of well-being. Valiant Richey, Global Head of Trust and Safety Outreach and Partnerships at TikTok, expressed the platform’s commitment to enhancing users’ well-being. “Millions come to TikTok daily to find community and information, including content related to their health. By collaborating with WHO’s Fides network of health influencers, we are strengthening our commitment to providing engaging and credible mental well-being content to our audience,” Richey said.
The Fides network, launched by WHO in 2020, has been instrumental in combating health misinformation by mobilizing over 800 health content creators. This network has reached over 150 million people across various platforms, delivering evidence-based health information and countering harmful narratives.
Transforming Health Communication with Digital Innovation
WHO’s Director of Digital Health and Innovation, Alain Labrique, emphasized the importance of engaging influencers to bridge the gap between science and everyday life. “Creators who understand their audience have a unique role in simplifying complex health information and making it relatable,” he said. “This is where WHO can support influencers in delivering evidence-based content, ensuring health conversations on platforms like TikTok are impactful and informed.”
Through this partnership, TikTok and WHO’s Fides network will collaborate to create engaging video content on critical health topics. TikTok will also offer specialized training programs for influencers, helping them develop effective content that promotes credible health information and encourages informed decision-making.
The collaboration between WHO and TikTok marks a significant step in addressing the spread of health misinformation while leveraging the power of digital platforms to improve global health literacy.
