Egypt Records Nearly 20 Million Digital Treatment Approvals as Health Insurance Reform Advances

Egypt’s push toward a digitally integrated healthcare system has gained substantial momentum, with the Ministry of Health and Population confirming that nearly 20 million electronic treatment approvals were processed through the General Authority for Health Insurance in the 2024/2025 fiscal year.

The update, shared on Saturday, reflects Egypt’s deepening commitment to digital health transformation as part of its broader healthcare reform agenda.

According to Dr. Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, spokesperson for the ministry, the milestone represents a “significant breakthrough” in digital healthcare delivery. He revealed that over 13 million online medical appointments have been booked across 250 fully digitised clinics, while an additional 120 clinics are currently undergoing digital upgrades and infrastructure enhancements.

The digitalisation drive also includes the transformation of health information systems. To date, 160 clinic archives have been digitised, with work underway to convert another 247 archives. In parallel, 239 medical warehouses have been automated to streamline supply chain efficiency.

Several specialist medical committees—covering cardiology, cochlear implants, hematology, and hormone-related treatments—have also been brought onto digital platforms. Furthermore, Egypt’s hospitals are now being integrated into the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS), improving the management and sharing of medical imaging records nationwide.

Ahmed Mostafa, Head of the Health Insurance Authority, announced the successful integration of the New Administrative Capital Hospital’s digital platform into the National Unified Emergency and Safety Network. He further disclosed that preparations are underway to deploy artificial intelligence (AI) services and enhance the digital infrastructure across affiliated hospitals.

Mostafa reiterated the Authority’s alignment with Egypt’s National Digital Transformation Strategy, emphasising that healthcare digitalisation remains a core pillar of ongoing reform efforts. “Our digital expansion aims to elevate service delivery, strengthen operational efficiency, and improve health outcomes for all Egyptians,” he said.

The Health Ministry’s progress is part of Egypt’s broader ambition to develop a resilient, inclusive, and technology-driven healthcare ecosystem, aligning with national priorities under Vision 2030.
