SA: UNICEF, World Bank Partner with South Africa to Strengthen Pandemic Preparedness

South Africa is set to launch a major global health initiative aimed at enhancing pandemic preparedness and response across low- and middle-income countries.

The Pandemic Fund — a global financing mechanism hosted by the World Bank — will be officially launched this Thursday in Pretoria, in collaboration with the Department of Health, World Health Organization (WHO), United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

The initiative marks a significant milestone in international efforts to bolster health system resilience and ensure a coordinated response to future health emergencies. The Department of Health, serving as the lead implementing agency, will oversee South Africa’s engagement with the Pandemic Fund to strengthen national capacity in pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response.

According to a joint statement from the partners, the launch underscores South Africa’s leadership in advancing health security on the continent.

Key highlights of the event will include:

  • Unveiling of South Africa’s Pandemic Fund implementation strategy

  • High-level keynote addresses from national and international health leaders

  • A panel session on pandemic preparedness and system strengthening

  • Media briefings and stakeholder networking opportunities

Senior representatives from multiple ministries — including Health; Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development; and Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment — are expected to attend, alongside development partners, civil society actors, and international agencies.

This multi-agency collaboration reinforces the role of strategic investment and cross-sector coordination in mitigating the impacts of future global health crises.
