Health Minister Firas Hawari announced the commencement of the first phase of the Comprehensive Health Coverage (CHC) plan on Thursday, marking a significant step in Jordan’s healthcare reform. This major initiative, approved by the government in June, aims to enhance the quality of healthcare services across the country.
During the inauguration of the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED)-funded Sayhan Primary Health Centre in Balqa governorate, Minister Hawari emphasized that the first phase of the CHC plan focuses on improving primary healthcare services through both structural and legislative reforms. These efforts are also directed towards ensuring financial sustainability within the healthcare sector.
“As part of this initiative, 34 branch health centres have been consolidated into ‘primary and comprehensive’ centres, emphasizing quality over quantity,” Hawari stated.
The minister highlighted several recent advancements in the health sector, including the opening of 12 new health centres across eight governorates, the expansion and renovation of three existing centres, and the enlargement of Prince Hussein Bin Abdullah II Hospital. Additionally, plans are underway for the expansion of Maan Government Hospital.
Minister Hawari expressed gratitude to Kuwait for its ongoing support in bolstering Jordan’s healthcare infrastructure.
Balqa Governor Salman Najada also spoke at the event, noting that the new Sayhan Primary Health Centre will significantly enhance the quality of healthcare services for local residents and reduce the burden on the nearby Subeihi Comprehensive Health Centre.
The Sayhan Primary Health Centre, spanning 800 square meters and funded by a JD830,000 grant from the KFAED, offers a variety of services, including general medicine, dentistry, family medicine, maternal and child care, vaccinations, laboratory services, and an emergency room. The centre is expected to serve more than 5,000 residents, providing essential healthcare services to the community.
