Nigeria: Lagos Partners with Interswitch to Revolutionize Healthcare with Tech-Driven Solutions

The Lagos State government has recognized the transformative potential of data-driven healthcare and has partnered with Interswitch to enhance the delivery of healthcare services across the state. The collaboration focuses on leveraging Interswitch’s advanced technology infrastructure through the Lagos State Health Information Platform (Lagos SHIP), a digital healthcare initiative designed to improve experiences for all healthcare stakeholders.

During a stakeholders’ engagement forum organized by Interswitch Group and the Lagos State government, Professor Akinola Abayomi, Lagos State Commissioner for Health, emphasized the critical role of accurate data in healthcare delivery. He highlighted how Lagos SHIP will streamline healthcare processes, reduce administrative burdens, and enable more informed decision-making. This, in turn, will lead to cost savings, better resource allocation, and improved patient outcomes across Lagos State.

Lagos SHIP is envisioned as a comprehensive health information system that bridges the gap between patients and healthcare providers. The platform will allow Lagos residents to easily book appointments, pay for consultations, access medical records, and purchase medications. By utilizing Interswitch’s robust technology, the platform aims to deliver a seamless and efficient healthcare experience for all users.

“We are living in a time of rapid transformation in healthcare, driven by advancements in technology and a shift towards more informed and involved patients,” Prof. Abayomi said. “The Lagos SHIP initiative, a joint effort by the Lagos State Government and Interswitch Group, is designed to revolutionize healthcare services in the state by connecting patients to doctors, streamlining patient care through electronic medical records, and solving operational challenges.”

Dr. Wallace Ogufere, Managing Director of Interswitch e’Clat, reaffirmed Interswitch’s commitment to improving health outcomes in Lagos. He noted that Interswitch, through its healthcare subsidiary Interswitch e’Clat, is working closely with the state government to establish a healthcare model that could serve as an example not only for other states in Nigeria but also across the continent.

“Through Lagos SHIP, we will support the Lagos State government in unlocking the potential of electronic medical records, securely leveraging data from public and private healthcare facilities,” Dr. Ogufere said. “This will enhance experiences for all stakeholders, from healthcare administrators to medical professionals and patients alike.”

Dr. Ogufere further explained that Lagos SHIP will incorporate advanced technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), machine learning, virtual care, wearables, data analytics, and the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT). These technologies will redefine healthcare delivery, making it more accessible, efficient, and personalized.

The Lagos SHIP Engagement Forum was organized to raise awareness about the platform, educate stakeholders on its benefits and functionalities, and address concerns related to data security and privacy within the Lagos healthcare ecosystem. The forum also aimed to secure stakeholder buy-in and support for the platform’s widespread adoption.

The launch of Lagos SHIP underscores Interswitch’s commitment to driving positive change and enhancing healthcare delivery across Lagos State. Both Interswitch and the Lagos State Government are confident that Lagos SHIP will serve as a catalyst for significant transformation within the healthcare sector, ultimately improving the well-being of millions of residents.
