Global: Mayo Clinic Collaborates with Cerebras Systems to Advance AI in Healthcare

The Mayo Clinic, renowned for its three major campuses across the U.S. and international locations, has entered into a partnership with Cerebras Systems to leverage cutting-edge computing chips and systems for the development of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare.

Mayo Clinic aims to utilize Cerebras’ technology to delve into decades of anonymized medical records and data, crafting AI models to enhance healthcare processes. Dr. Matthew Callstrom, Mayo’s medical director for strategy and chair of the radiology department, explained that some models will focus on reading and generating text, summarizing crucial information from extensive medical records for new patients. Other models will be designed to analyze images for patterns that might elude human eyes or scrutinize genome data. It’s emphasized that the AI systems will not replace medical decisions made by doctors but rather augment their decision-making process.

In an interview, Dr. Callstrom emphasized the role of AI in augmenting decision-making by weighing various factors and leveraging extensive experience. The outcomes of Mayo Clinic’s collaboration with Cerebras will be integrated into the Mayo Clinic Platform, a data network shared with entities like the Mercy healthcare system, University Health Network in Canada, and systems in Brazil and Israel.

Mayo Clinic intends to disclose further details about this initiative during a presentation at JPMorgan Chase’s healthcare conference in San Francisco. Regarding pricing for the AI technology, Mayo Clinic has yet to make a final decision. The collaboration is deemed a “multi-million-dollar” agreement over several years, according to Cerebras CEO Andrew Feldman, who highlighted the comprehensive support Cerebras will provide, encompassing both hardware and software development services. Cerebras, among several AI chip startups challenging market leader Nvidia, looks to contribute significantly to Mayo Clinic’s AI-driven healthcare advancements.
