Regtech Africa Roundtable – Dialogue Registration (RAR 4.0)
Overview: – The race to Digital Economy: Leveraging digital to unlock the base of the pyramid market in Africa
The exponential growth in digitization and internet connectivity is the back-bone of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, which has impacted all sectors, including financial services.
The level of formal banking and insurance penetration across Africa remains low. However, the industry’s potential – particularly for products that are tailored to the needs of the low-income segment at the base of the pyramid (BoP) – remains largely untapped.
More than half of Africa’s work force falls into this low income bracket. Although the base of the pyramid consumers represent the majority of spending power in Africa, their low income has been seen as a hindrance to providing products and services through traditional distribution models. For example, traditional financial service providers (FSPs) that rely on bricks-and-mortar branches, ATMs, and the payment infrastructure of banks, have struggled to capture these low income consumers. This is partly because of high costs linked to their traditional models, as well as an element of mistrust that clouds part of the industry.
Conversely, Sub-Saharan Africa has witnessed significant growth in mobile money adoption, usage, and innovation. As this trend continues, new market entrants have started to disrupt traditional business models by introducing digital technology at various parts of the value chain to unlock Africa’s mass market.
How can these opportunities be harnessed to go beyond the basics but meet the unmet demand in the region for other, underdeveloped financial services that can facilitate the digitalization of other segments of the economy?
Against this backdrop, we are pleased to invite you to the Regtech Africa Roundtable dialogue series scheduled for Thursday, 19th November, 2020 at 14:00 (WAT), with the theme: Beyond Payments: Going up the value chain of Digital Economy in emerging markets – Cross vertical perspectives. .
