PalmPay Partners with Federal Government to Champion Youth Data Privacy Awareness

PalmPay, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, has launched the Youth Data Protection Awareness and Training (YDPAT) programme—an initiative aimed at equipping over one million Nigerian youths with the skills and knowledge to navigate the digital age safely and responsibly.

The programme was officially unveiled at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja, marking a significant milestone in efforts to promote data privacy awareness among Nigeria’s young population.

Speaking at the launch, the Minister of Youth Development, Comrade Ayodele Olawande, described the initiative as a “bold step” towards building a digitally literate, privacy-conscious generation. He highlighted the critical need for awareness, noting that although Nigeria has over 500,000 data controllers, understanding of the Nigerian Data Protection Act (NDPA) 2023 remains limited, and the country lacks sufficient certified Data Protection Officers (DPOs).

PalmPay’s Managing Director, Mr. Chika Nwosu, underscored the company’s commitment to privacy and responsible innovation. “We don’t just innovate—we embed privacy into every stage of our product development,” he stated.

Beyond training, the YDPAT programme will provide top-performing participants with access to mentorship and internship opportunities, facilitating career pathways in data governance, cybersecurity, and related fields.

This initiative builds on PalmPay’s existing community impact efforts, including the Purple Woman Campaign and the Passing the Baton CSR programme, which have reached thousands across underserved communities.

The YDPAT initiative has commenced its rollout across Northern Nigeria, with further state-level activations planned in the coming months. Through this partnership, PalmPay and the Federal Government aim to foster a generation that is not only digitally connected but also empowered and protected in the data-driven era.
