The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with global cybersecurity firm Kaspersky to strengthen Nigeria’s digital security architecture and safeguard critical infrastructure.
The agreement, signed on the sidelines of GTIEX Nigeria in Lagos, marks a key step in advancing NITDA’s Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan (SRAP 2.0), particularly its fifth pillar: “Strengthen Cybersecurity and Enhance Digital Trust.” It also aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda’s goal of bolstering national security for peace and prosperity.
NITDA’s Director-General, Kashifu Inuwa, underscored the human dimension of cybersecurity, noting that over 95% of cyber breaches stem from human error. He stressed the need to build capacity, raise awareness, and ensure responsible technology use. “This MoU is not just a formality; it is a springboard for action. We want the media and the public to hold us accountable for delivering on this partnership,” Inuwa stated.
He explained that the collaboration with Kaspersky will address diverse cybersecurity needs — from safe digital practices for children and the elderly to protecting critical national infrastructure.
Kaspersky’s General Manager for Africa, Chris Norton, expressed strong commitment to Nigeria’s digital future, saying: “Africa doesn’t need charity, it needs skills. Through public-private partnerships like this, we can accelerate value creation for communities and governments.” He added that Kaspersky will also become a supporting member of the Nigerian Computer Society, reinforcing its long-term commitment to the country.
The MoU outlines joint efforts in cybersecurity training, capacity building, public awareness campaigns, information sharing, and protection of critical national infrastructure. Kaspersky will also provide threat intelligence, technical advisory, and support in developing cybersecurity frameworks and standards for Nigeria.
The partnership builds on earlier engagements initiated at GITEX Africa in Morocco and complements similar agreements Kaspersky has signed with other Nigerian institutions, including SMEDAN. Both parties have pledged to move swiftly into implementation, focusing on proactive measures to counter emerging cyber threats and strengthen Nigeria’s digital resilience.
